Black Widow Spiders: A Friendly Guide for Ellis County Homeowners

Black widows have a big reputation, but Texas A&M AgriLife describes them as very timid spiders. Knowing where they like to hide makes it easy to stay out of their way. Here are answers to the questions we hear most.
Where do black widows hide around Texas homes?
A 2019 AgriLife Today article says black widows can be found year-round in sheltered spots like sheds, garages, attics, and crawl spaces. Mayo Clinic adds woodpiles, unused pots and gardening equipment, and closets in cold weather. Wear gloves when you reach into these places.
Are black widows aggressive?
No. In a 2019 AgriLife Today article, Texas A&M AgriLife entomologist Wizzie Brown calls the black widow very timid and says that even when disturbed in its web, a black widow tries to escape rather than attack.
How do I identify a black widow?
Look for a shiny black spider with long legs and a red hourglass-shaped mark on its underside. Mayo Clinic says that, including legs, it is about 1 inch across. Texas is home to southern, northern, and western black widows, plus the non-native brown widow.
What should I do if I'm bitten?
General guidance only: the 2019 AgriLife Today article says it is important to seek medical attention if bitten by a black widow, no matter your age. Mayo Clinic lists possible symptoms such as pain and swelling at the bite, severe stomach cramping, nausea, sweating, or tremors. Get medical care right away, and call 911 for trouble breathing or swallowing. For advice, call the Texas Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222, free and open 24/7. This is general information, not medical advice.
Which Texas spiders are actually dangerous?
Most spiders are harmless, and many are helpful predators of other insects. Mayo Clinic notes that only a few kinds of spiders can harm people. In the U.S., the main ones are widow spiders and recluse spiders. If you are not sure what bit you, get it checked.
